A canal adventure programme and the development of mountain bike trails at Castlecomer Discovery Park are among the projects being considered as Kilkenny is to receive €47,000 from the Dormant Accounts Fund, Junior Minister, John Paul Phelan, has confirmed.

Minister of State Kyne has told Minister Phelan he has approved an application from the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport for funding from the Dormant Accounts Fund which will be administered by the Kilkenny Recreation & Sports Partnership.

“The total funding for Kilkenny is €47,000 – €25,000 current and €22,000 capital. Kilkenny is one of 11 counties to benefit and among the areas set to benefit are Graiguenmanagh, Kilkenny City and Castlecomer”, said Phelan.

“There are a number of elements being considered and these include a water-based programme in conjunction with Waterways Ireland which will be the first pilot of the Canal Adventure Programme in Kilkenny. Also proposed are further land and water-based programmes that will be delivered to schools in Kilkenny.”

“Among the other proposals from KRSP are the purchase of equipment to make the outdoors more accessible for people with a disability and finally, the development of Mountain Bike Trails in Castlecomer Discovery Park. It is proposed that capital funding will go towards the purchase of mountain bikes, cycling equipment and storage facilities,” Minister Phelan confirmed.
