If goals win games, then the blend of youth, experience and a healthy attitude towards discipline may well be responsible for the points that go on the board.

Brothers John and Niall Reid were part of the Palatine setup that successfully defended their Carlow Senior Football title against Rathvilly in Netwatch Cullen Park on Sunday 9 October.

“To win it last year was savage”, said John Reid following the win, “but two in a row, we only dream about these things in Pal. It’s all down to them young lads. The confidence in them young lads is unreal, it’s sky high. I’d be often doubting myself you know, playing against Rathvilly, but those young lads would turn around and go ‘Stretch – don’t worry about it, we’ll beat them”.

For Niall, his own disclipline, and changes made to it, played a large part in remaining with the Palatine senior football setup.

“My disclipline let the club down in the last couple of years, and I had to go back – the club punished me for certain things – so I had to go back and work on my discipline and work hard behind the scenes to get back in the senior team and I’m glad now I’m back here. This is what it’s all about – winning championships. If you get a belt, just get on with it.”
