Luke Donald has completed his team for the 2023 Ryder Cup at the end of the month in Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Guidonia Montecelio
Rory McIlroy was one of the six automatic spots known after Sunday’s Omega European Masters, the others were Jon Rahm and Robert MacIntyre who qualified via the European Points List, and Viktor Hovland, Tyrrell Hatton, and Matt Fitzpatrick qualifying via the World Points Lis. The other six spots would be down to Luke Donald who had six captains picks for this year’s event. Just after 2 pm today he announced who he would bring with him to Ryder Cup 2023 as Team Europe.
It was hoped that Shane Lowry might be one of Donald’s picks and to everyone’s delight, he was. The European captain also picked a rookie and will give a debut to Ludvig Aberg who is just four months into his professional career, Tommy Fleetwood, Nicolai Hojgaard, Justin Rose, and Sepp Straka are the other picks that Donald went with to make up his team.
The USA team will be coming to Europe as the defending champions but knowing that they haven’t won the title on European soil since the 1993 event at the Belfry. It will be Lowry’s second Ryder Cup event having qualified automatically to be part of the European team at the 2021 Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits. The US team won 19–9 and Lowry went 1–2–0. He spoke with media after the announcement “I’m obviously incredibly proud, grateful, very excited for Rome,” Lowry said. “The last one hurt a little bit and I’m excited for a home Ryder Cup. I’m very grateful that Luke has given me the opportunity to go there and show what I can do again.”
The event gets underway on September 29th and will run through over the weekend till October 1st, Europe will be hoping to win back the famous Cup and keep it on European Soil
