We brought you eight live games over the weekend from Carlow and Kilkenny in a bumper weekend of GAA

GAA

Carlow football champions Palatine have suffered their second defeat of this years senior football championship after a five point loss to Old Leighlin in Netwatch Cullen Park yesterday. Speaking to KCLR after last nights game, manager Pado Flynn said “Its championship football next week, loser goes home as such and is in the relegation final”

There was also wins for Mount Leinster Rangers over Fenagh, Tinryland over Bagenalstown Gaels, and Rathvilly over Éire Óg in the senior grade.

In the Intermediate grade there was wins for Kildavin/Clonegal, St Patrick’s, Eire Og while Naomh Eoin and Clonmore played out a draw.

While in Kilkenny, senior champions Shamrocks Ballyhale suffered another defeat at the hands of Bennettsbridge at the weekend, it means Ballyhale are fifth in the table and facing a relegation semi final with one round of games to go

Elsewhere Tullaroan got their third win in the group at the expense of Danesfort, Dicksboro kept up their 100% record with a win over Mullinavat, James Stephens beat Erins Own and Glenmore suffered their first defeat of the league at the hands of Graigue Ballycallan.

In the Intermediate league there was wins over the weekend for Conahy Shamrocks, Lisdowney, Thomastown, Blacks & Whites, Rower Inistioge and St Martins.

In the Junior Grade there was a big win for Windgap over Slieverue and Emeralds over John Lockes and St Lachtains over St Patricks, there was also wins for Tullogher Rosbercon, Dicksboro, Barrow Rangers, James Stephens, while Graignamanagh and Piltown played out a thrilling draw.

Soccer

The Kilkenny District league kicked off at the weekend with one game in the Junior KCLR Scoreline.ie division one league with Tullaroan AFC beating River Rangers A

Golf

We now know who the six automatic spots for team Europe are ahead of this years Ryder Cup at the end of the month in Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Guidonia Montecelio. Luke Donald will announce his six captains picks later today. It is expected that Shane Lowry will be one of those picks.

USA captain Zack Johnson has finalized his team for the event at the end of the Month. Team USA come into this Ryder Cup as defending champions after their victory at Whistling Straits in 2021, with USA looking for their first Ryder Cup win on European soil since 1993

Meanwhile USA fought back to beat Great Britain and Ireland and retain the Walker Cup at St Andrews over the weekend.

The GB&I team took a three point lead after the opening day, but the USA won Sunday morning’s session 3-1 to reduce the margin and then with the singles games they won seven of the ten games to retain the cup, it’s their fourth Walker Cup in a row.

Tennis

Defending US Open champion Iga Swiatek’s US Open title defence is over after defeat to Jelena Ostapenko, she beat the world number one 3-6 6-3 6-1. Swiatek’s reign as world number one will also end following the tournament, with Aryna Sabalenka set to take over the top spot

Novak Djokovic is also through to the next round after a straight sets win over Borna Gojo from Croatia. Next up for the Serbian is Taylor Frit
