Best quarter-finals
- Netherlands vs Costa Rica – 2014, Brazil
Louis Van Gaal replaced Jasper Cillessen with Krul in the last second of extra-time. Krul went on to save numerous penalties to put the Netherlands through.
- Uruguay vs Ghana – 2010, South Africa
A 40-yard stunner from Ghana’s Sulley Muntari, followed by an equaliser from Uruguay’s Diego Forlan forced the match into extra-time. In the last moments of second-half extra-time, Luiz Suarez stopped Ghan’s shot on goal with his hands, resulting in an instant red card for him and a spot-kick for the Black Stars.
- England vs Portugal – 2006
Remembered for Cristiano Ronaldo winking after Wayner Rooney was sent off in the World Cup. England ultimately lost on penalties.
- Senegal vs Turkey – 2002
The concept of a Golden Goal may be alien to the latest generation of football fans, but the last of it in a men’s FIFA World Cup came in a quarterfinal 20 years ago at the Nagai Stadium in Japan.
Worst
- Ireland vs Italy – 1990
F**k Schillaci. The only time Ireland made it to Quarterfinal.

The Glazers announced last month they’re looking at a potential sale.
They’ve controversially taken dividends for over half a decade, despite losses during Covid.
