Gaelic Games

We have one live game on KCLR this weekend.

We continue to follow James Stephens’s journey to an All-Ireland final

The village goes up against Castlegar in Limerick, and manager John Scott says despite the weather his team is up for the challenge. Check out the full interview on our Caman Caint Podcast below

Today, one Kilkenny team can look forward to a Leinster Junior Hurling ‘A1’ Final.

Castlecomer CS takes on St. Brendan’s CS Birr at 12.30 in Borris-in-Ossory.

Speaking of looking forward the fixture lists have been released by the GAA last night.

The league begins for both Carlow and Kilkenny on the 4th of February.

Kilkenny’s first match is against Antrim in Belfast while Carlow welcomes Kildare to Netwatch Cullen Park meanwhile a trip to Dungarvan to play Waterford is on the cards for the Carlow footballers on the same day but they start proceeding the week before against Wicklow.

Soccer

There are two games tonight in the Nationalist Premier Division tonight.

Killeshin FC plays Vale Wanderers, while St. Patricks Boys go up against New Oak Boys

We will be chatting with the Carlow District League secretary tomorrow on Scoreline.

The Kilkenny junior leagues will be coming to a winter break after this weekend. We will have full fixtures up online today.

Two World Cup quarter-finals are down for decision later today.

At 3 pm, Brazil will look to keep their hopes alive of a first success since 2002 when they take on Croatia.

This evening, the Netherlands faces Argentina at 7 pm.

Best quarter-finals

  1. Netherlands vs Costa Rica – 2014, Brazil

Louis Van Gaal replaced Jasper Cillessen with Krul in the last second of extra-time. Krul went on to save numerous penalties to put the Netherlands through.

  • Uruguay vs Ghana – 2010, South Africa

A 40-yard stunner from Ghana’s Sulley Muntari, followed by an equaliser from Uruguay’s Diego Forlan forced the match into extra-time. In the last moments of second-half extra-time, Luiz Suarez stopped Ghan’s shot on goal with his hands, resulting in an instant red card for him and a spot-kick for the Black Stars.

  • England vs Portugal – 2006

Remembered for Cristiano Ronaldo winking after Wayner Rooney was sent off in the World Cup. England ultimately lost on penalties.

  • Senegal vs Turkey – 2002

The concept of a Golden Goal may be alien to the latest generation of football fans, but the last of it in a men’s FIFA World Cup came in a quarterfinal 20 years ago at the Nagai Stadium in Japan.

Worst

  • Ireland vs Italy – 1990

F**k Schillaci. The only time Ireland made it to Quarterfinal.

Speaking of Ireland, martin O’Neill was in the news for speaking about not being able to convince Jack Grealish and Declan Rice to declare for Ireland.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 “Rice wanted to play for England… Grealish was the same!”

❌ “You can’t coerce players!”

🙏 “It’s what they wanted! I’m not going to disavow them of that!”

Elsewhere, Manchester United has decided not to pay the latest dividend to the club’s owners, the Glazer family.

A net loss of 26-and-a-half-million pounds has been reported for the first quarter of the year.

The Glazers announced last month they’re looking at a potential sale.

They’ve controversially taken dividends for over half a decade, despite losses during Covid.

Rugby

The Heineken Champions Cup gets underway this evening.

London Irish face Montpellier in Pool B, with kick-off in Brentford at 8 pm.

The Challenge Cup also begins, with Stade Francais up against Benetton and Perpignan playing host to Bristol.

Racing

There’s racing at Dundalk this evening, with the first off at 5 pm.

Meanwhile, an inspection will take place at Navan ahead of tomorrow’s seven-race card.

In England, Cheltenham must pass a second inspection at 10.30 am before today’s fixture can proceed.
