Stall the ball: Colm Whelan has signed with FAI Cup champions Derry City

Former Thomastown player Colm Whelan has signed with FAI Cup champions Derry City on a two-year contract.

The 22-year-old netted 44 times in 66 games with UCD, helping them to a promotion in the process. Scoring in last year’s relegation playoff with Waterford along with Kilkenny’s Dara Keane.

A cruciate knee ligament injury has put an end to Colm Whelan’s 2022 season with UCD and scuppered a potential summer move abroad. Whelan’s exploits have earned him regular call-ups to Jim Crawford’s under-21 Irish squads and become shortlisted for PFAI First Division Player of the Year.

Speaking with the clubs official website Colm had this to say;

“I watched the FAI Cup final and was really impressed by what Derry and their fans did that weekend.”

“I’ve only played once at the Brandywell so far- a 7-1 defeat- so I’ll have to make sure there are many better nights than that one.”

“I can’t wait to get started and can promise supporters a lot of hard work and hopefully a lot of goals”

Its marks a great week for his former club who proudly watched on as fellow former player Ellen Molloy was named on the WNL Team of the Season while the club become the latest one to be awarded the FAI club mark Entry Level award
