The Board of the FAI acknowledges that it is the right decision by UEFA to postpone all national team matches for men and women due to be played in June until further notice.

They stated that the The health and safety of everyone connected with football remains of paramount importance to the FAI and they will continue to follow all directives from Government, the Department of Health and UEFA.

Mick McCarthy is the current Ireland manager, but Stephen Kenny is due to take over on August 1st.The FAI will have to decide who will lead the Republic of Ireland into the rescheduled European Championship play off against Slovakia.

There are also implications for the Republic of Ireland women’s team, with the European Championship finals set to be put back a year until 2022.

UEFA have also confirmed following a meeting with its 55 member associations, that its club competitions remain suspended until further notice. They also expressed wished that the remaining league be finished. The Dutch football (KNVB) issued a statement saying it would follow UEFA’s direction to attempt to finish the season suspended by 3 August.

Ajax techinical director and former Arsenal player Marc Overmars was quite irate about the decision. Even though Ajax are currently top of the Dutch league on goal difference, Overmars believes the season should be scrapped.

“The league is dead, life is more important.”
