“The split season doesn’t suit us” Fenagh manager John Hickey highlights difficulties his side have faced at senior level

We have reached the quarter-final stages of the Carlow Senior football championship, however, two teams that will not be in the competition are last year’s Senior winners Palatine, and intermediate champions Fenagh.

Both teams have failed to pick up a victory in the league stages this year and will now go head to head in a relegation playoff.

Speaking to KCLR Fenagh manager John Hickey outlined the difficulty the split season posed on his side this campaign.

Bagenalstown Gaels manager has full confidence in his team

“The split season doesn’t suit us at all. We’ve so many lads that are hurling as well. We always encouraged the lads to play hurling. We wouldn’t say don’t go hurling, we encouraged them to go hurling.”

“The problem is they’re gone for seven or eight weeks. We can’t expect them to be out five nights a week in matches, and training, and then injuries are going to start.”

“It suits the big clubs. They’re able to time their run into the championship a lot better. If a guy picks up an injury, it’s hard. He hasn’t got time to recover.”
