Tullow are one step close to making sure of a Division 1B playoff place as they picked up a vital 22-10 win over North Kildare at Black Gates.

The game was considered a dress rehearsal for their Provincial Towns Cup quarter-final clash in two weeks time.

With tough exchanges in the first half, it was the home side who went in 12-7 up at the break.

Tullow extended their lead to 15-7 early in the second, with North Kildare taking a penalty for themselves to clsoe the gap back to 15-10 about 25 minutes later. Tullow would close the game out with a try to make sure of the points and keep their promotion playoff hopes alive.

Elsewhere, Mullingar light work of Suttonians whose fall from grace continues towards Division 2A (35-15) while Clondalkin (in third) kept up pace with Tullow by securing a 18-15 away win to Portlaoise.

Wicklow were crowned Division 1B champions on home soil with a 28-19 win over Coolmine.

There’s one round of fixtures left in Division 1B, those games set for Sunday 12 March. Clondalkin will host Mullingar at Gordon Park Kingswood; Coolmine welcome Portlaoise to Ashbook; North Kildare wrap things up against champions Wicklow; while Suttonians, facing a second successive relegation, host promotion-chasing Tullow.
