Carlow began their 2016 Allianz Football League campaign with a 1-12 to 0-10 defeat to Antrim at Netwatch Cullen Park on Sunday afternoon.

After the final whistle, Kevin Regan caught up with Carlow boss Turlough O’Brien to assess the game.

I’m very proud of the effort we put in there today. I thought we dominated the game in terms of possession, in terms of area. We played in their half for quite a bit of the game, unfortunately we didn’t avail of the wind in the first half.

We kicked nine bad wides, some of them were poor choices – that put us under pressure. We conceded a goal from a mistake that we made ourselves.

We were right in this game right to the end. We battled back well, found them hard to break down with a packed defence there and we were playing into a very strong breeze but I think, you know, we should have gotten something out of the game.

Carlow head to Ruislip to take on London next weekend and on looking forward towards London and the run of the season, O’Brien offered

“Based on that game there today, if we can produce the same level of effort and commitment to it and brush up on our shooting and some of our link play, we could be right in the mix at the end of the league.”

Hit play below to hear the full conversation, taking note that it’s a bit on the windy side at Netwatch Cullen Park, in particular around the three minute mark.
