The Michael Lyng Motors Senior Football Championship in Carlow is set to ignite this week, with a series of thrilling matchups lined up to kick off the competition.
Netwatch Cullen Park will play host to the opening fixture on Thursday night, as Rathvilly takes on Palatine in what promises to be a fierce battle.
The action continues on Friday with two crucial encounters, one of which will see last year’s defeated finalists, Tinryland, take the field. Tinryland will face Old Leighlin in Group 1, a game that holds significant importance for a team still smarting from back-to-back final losses.
Speaking to KCLR ahead of the match, Tinryland’s Niall Lowry reflected on his club’s recent performances and the pressure to return to their former glory.
“We’ve been in the last two finals—last year, obviously it didn’t go as we wanted, and the year before, we were probably a bit closer,” Lowry said. “But before that, we weren’t in the top four for a number of years. It’s kind of only the last two years. I know Tinryland has a big name around Carlow, but in recent times, we probably haven’t done as well as some people said we should have. Hopefully, we can get back close enough to it again this year.”
Lowry’s words reflect a broader sentiment within Tinryland, a club with a proud history that has, in recent seasons, fallen just short of the ultimate prize. The upcoming match against Old Leighlin will be a crucial test of their resolve as they seek to re-establish themselves among Carlow’s elite.
