With “six down and seven to play” as Ruby Walsh put it earlier in the week, Willie Mullins has clawed his way past Gordon Elliott in the race for the Champion National Hunt Trainer Title 2016/2017.

After race eight on day four of the 2017 Punchestown National Hunt Festival, the difference in total prize-money between Willie Mullins and Gordon Elliott stood at €91,295.

Comparing like for like, Elliott has amassed 1222 runs this season, yielding 192 wins with a combined 445 placings out to fourth to rack up just over €2.8m in win money with almost €1.5m in place money.

Elliott’s total prize money for the season heading into its final day stands at €4,306,905.

Mullins’ runners look more conservative to Elliot’s with 555 runs so far this season, yielding 178 wins and a combined 205 places. Those wins earned the trainer just over €3.1m with a further €1.25 in place money.

Mullins total prize money up to Friday’s conclusion stands at €4,398,200.

Between them, Elliott and Mullins have generated over €8.7m in prize money for 2016/17.

Today’s eight race card, the last of the season, gets underway at 2.35pm with the final race off at 6.40pm.
