After last weeks session, I was surprised that I did not feel the normal things after working out. That being, horrible knots in my back and shoulders. Don’t get me wrong, I was sore, (My legs, my poor legs), but it was a nice feeling. Once a week on each muscle seemed more then enough for what I am trying to accomplish.
The main thing is I am enjoying the actual training. I loved my running, but the gym was always kinda tacked on at the end of my run, looking at my watch constantly. Now that my running was gone, I was missing that natural high in my life. I have found that training with Davy. The positivity that surrounds working out and the lifestyle in the gym is infectious. Makes you look forward to going. My knee now feels somewhat stable after 16 days on the sideline, so I hope to be back out running on a regular basis very soon.
First session :
Back and chest was on the cards , much like last week. In fact it was pretty much the same work out as last time, with a slight weight increase. The KG’s on the plates may seem light but they may aswell be two elephants hanging at the end of the bar for some reps. The volume of reps is something that I was not accustomed to but am coming around to the idea. The repetition is conducive for building muscle, however I felt lethargic and that was totally my own fault. I was instructed to eat 2,200 calories a day with alot of protein. It has been a trial and error, figuring out the appropriate things to be eating. My body may be screaming for energy, but I cant get over that mental block. I tend to beat myself up for everything I eat. I do not have a healthy relationship with food at all, and it is something I am worried about going forward. I am asking my body to do stressful stuff, yet I never seem to give it the fuel it needs. This day I only took in 1600 calories and I could feel it. Lee, another PT in Davy Jones Fitness was on hand to keep me going, but I know myself I was not at the races.
Second session :
Leg Day….I needed to be at the races. After last weeks session, my legs where sore for the week. I even had to go on a very long walk before training to try get the blood flowing in hope they will be OK for this bastard of a day. Vinnie was in charge today, dictating stuff we would be doing for the day. My heart slightly broke when he said super-sets to begin. Squats into lunges, once again high reps, I struggled, but I was up for today. I wanted to come in and just give it everything I had, cause I knew how I felt leaving the day before, I did not want to leave today disappointed. I said last week that the leg day was my most enjoyable day in the gym in a long time, I think this beat it. It was not just standard moving things, reps alternated between fast and slow, squeezing the muscle at the top, it was interesting. In fairness to Vinnie he explained the mechanics of each exercise very well. . Standing up became a challenge after every set, like a legless drunk (I have been there many times), but it was just exhaustion of the muscles. Almost a nervous giggle after involuntarily comes out from your belly, as if to say “I should not be doing this” We finished it off with another superset, which utilized a piece of equipment known at “The Prowler”. My legs would scream if they could, but the poor guys was just tuckered.
Third Session :
We skipped Thursday and went with a Friday arm and shoulder session. Shoulders, I always tend to focus on working my traps. I just liked doing traps, but I tended to neglect my deltoid. Stuff like this gets quickly found on when training with Davy. I was kind of embarrassed with some of my struggling in the session, but Davy was on hand to explain why certain things will be difficult and why they wont. Training with someone knowledgeable has really shone a light on my bad habits. I gave it 100% but it is quite humbling to give 100% and still feel weak. I know that as someone who is 6″1 and 93kg , I have serious potential to accomplish something I have never accomplished before with my body. The trials and tribulations are all part of that. We finished off the day with an biceps and triceps superset and that was it.
I have asked Davy about ab workouts and he recommends we do not dip our toes in that water just yet. For now it is about recovering the muscles, and doing it in quicker fashion. I think being able to run again will be a huge factor on this journey. My knee now feels somewhat stable after 16 days on the sideline, so I hope to be back out running on a regular basis very soon. Getting on a bike does not give me the same buzz,.
My food intake though I am worried about, I do not seem to be taking in a whole lot of calories, and my weight seems to be stagnant. I know scales are not gospel, I know I have not been able to do much cardio, and muscle does weigh more then fat. However it is a concern, I feel I am not eating the correct things. That is on my to educate myself, hold myself accountable.
